#BlockTober - Temple In the Mountains

October 31th, 2018

MainTempleWithTwobuilding.png

In the last week of October #blocktober month, I decided to spend a week and a half designing a Temple in the mountain, where it focuses on navigating the player to reach their goal.  The level was inspired by uncharted, Tomb Raider series and was also following a GDC Talk with David Shaver a Game Designer at Naughty Dog "blockmesh and lighting tips to guide player and set the mood".

In the podcast Level Design Lobby, there was a weekly task to create a traversal level in the mountains/forest area. Players must only use their movements to make there a way to a hut. This location and where it's taking place is up to you.

This level is available to download with the following link below;

With that in mind, I started to create the level using the Unreal Engine 4 with futures of DynamicLedgeClimbSystem, Super Grid and Ultra Dynamic Sky.

Overall Temple in the mountains Level

  • Third person Character

  • Action Adventure genre game

  • Focus on navigating the player to their goal.

  • Rock Climbing system

Story Beats
  • The Players Start outside the gate from the Temple.

  • When the player enters the temple gate the stairs to pass the mountain was broken.

  • When the player climbs the mountain to get across.

  • When the player reached halfway up the mountain they are able to see the main temple.

  • When the player is near the main temple they will see another temple gate,

  • When the player is outside the main gate the player will need to turn a switch to get inside the main temple.

  • When the player enters the main temple is where the level ends.

Gameplay Video
This is a first version of the level design that is subject to changes to improve upon it with the feedback I have received, where  players have said it doesn't encourage the player to explore but only has on a straight route to A to B, I should mix it up where their different route by still leading to the same destination.
